A woman is dead and a man in hospital after a car crashed into a body of water on a northern Saskatchewan reserve.

A female passenger was trapped inside the partially submerged vehicle when emergency crews arrived at the scene on the Red Earth First Nation on Saturday morning.

RCMP say the 36-year-old resident of the reserve was taken to hospital in Nipawin, where she was pronounced dead. Her name hasn’t been released.

The male driver of the vehicle was also taken to hospital in Nipawin with serious injuries and was later airlifted to Saskatoon.

Mounties say alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash. No charges have been laid.
