The chief of the Carry the Kettle First Nation has been acquitted of assaulting his wife.
Members of Ivan Thomson's family cheered and applauded after the not guilty verdict was read in Regina Provincial Court on Monday.
Thomson was accused of assaulting his wife Leanne on May 1, 2010.
The court heard testimony that Thomson struck his wife several times after she confronted him about photos of other women she found on his cellular phone.
However, Thomson testified his wife punched him. He said he shoved her in retaliation and she fell against a dresser, sustaining minor injuries to her face.
In his decision, Judge Clifford Toth said he couldn't determine which version of events was true, based on the evidence before the court.
"I'm definitely satisfied with the decision," Thomson told reporters outside the courthouse. "The truth came forward and prevailed."
