Crews in Moose Jaw are scrambling to get the water going after six water main breaks were reported before 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Two of the breaks have already been repaired, but crews are still working on breaks at the 1300 block of 2 Ave NW, 3 Ave & Maple Street, 3 Ave & High Street and the 1220 block of 1 Ave NW.

Water main breaks have been repaired and boil water advisories have been issued for 700 Caribou Street W and 300 Ross Street W.

So far this year there have been 63 water main breaks in Moose Jaw, compared to 49 in 2015. The city estimates the breaks today affected approximately 200 properties.

“Our public works manager is deploying additional resources to address this large number of breaks. Restoring full water service to affected residents is our priority,” Josh Mickleborough, Director of Engineering Services said in a written release. “These breaks are a sign of our aging cast iron infrastructure and stresses the urgency of cast iron water main replacements.”

Funding for new water mains will be the subject of a referendum in the upcoming civic election.
