The Crown is seeking dangerous offender status for a Saskatchewan man convicted of assaulting another inmate.

Gregory Todd Bellegarde was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm after he punched another inmate in the face in a prison cell in November 2010.

The single blow caused fractures to the victim’s jaw and orbital bone.

On Friday, the Crown asked for an assessment that could lead to Bellegarde being declared either a dangerous or long-term offender. The case was adjourned to June 18.

Bellegarde, 40, has a lengthy criminal record that includes several violent offences. If he’s declared a dangerous offender, he could be kept behind bars indefinitely.
