The Crown is seeking a life sentence for a Saskatchewan man convicted in the death of his elderly friend.

Dale Stonechild was found guilty last May of manslaughter in the death of Victor McNab.

McNab's body was found January 2013 in his home on Rae Street in Regina. He had been severely beaten and stabbed.

During sentencing arguments Wednesday, the Crown asked for a life sentence, citing the violent nature of the offence and Stonechild’s lengthy criminal record.

The defence is seeking a restorative sentence, referencing a report that lays out First Nations healing alternatives to jail time. Two witnesses testified for the defence about traditional rehabilitation programs.

The Crown is opposed to Stonechild serving his sentence in the community, saying he could pose a serious threat to the safety of those around him. The Crown also pointed out there are First Nations programs available in federal jails.

Stonechild has been remanded in custody until May 12, when he is expected to be sentenced.
