Saskatchewan’s Deputy Premier, Don McMorris, has resigned from cabinet following an impaired driving charge on Friday.

“I have no words to describe how sorry I am to my family, to my colleagues and to all the people of Saskatchewan for my actions.  But saying sorry is not enough,” said McMorris in an official statement Saturday morning.

McMorris was the minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, and Saskatchewan Government Insurance. He said he will be seeking counselling while he deals with the legal aspects of his charge.

“I never should have gotten behind the wheel after drinking. I know better,” said McMorris. “I am very sorry and take responsibility for my actions.”

Premier Brad Wall accepted McMorris’ resignation in a written statement Saturday.

“I am very disappointed in his actions.  Drinking and driving risks and ruins lives and is completely unacceptable,” said Wall.  “I respect that Don has taken full responsibility for his actions and I support his decision to step away from caucus and seek counselling.”

McMorris has resigned from cabinet, but will remain a Saskatchewan Party MLA. He will not be participating in caucus activities while he seeks counselling and deals with his legal situation.

Wall plans to name an interim minister to assume McMorris’ responsibilities on Monday.
