RCMP say two girls have admitted responsibility for a fire that destroyed the Young Hotel and Bar earlier this week.

Mounties say the two girls, ages 10 and 12, snuck out of their parents' home around 2 a.m. Sunday and grabbed some flyers from a post office before going to the hotel.

Police say they used the flyers to light a small fire to warm up, then returned home, leaving the fire unattended.

The hotel, built in 1910, burned to the ground. It was a favourite gathering spot in the community for many years, but had been vacant since last summer.

RCMP are encouraging parents to talk to their children about fire safety.
