Keith Dunford has been sentenced to two years minus a day in the death of Ashley Richards in 2012. The judge also banned Dunford from operating a vehicle for three years after he’s released.

In October, Dunford was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death. Dunford was charged after the vehicle he was driving hit 18-year-old Ashley Richards, who was working as a flag person in a construction zone on Highway 39 near Midale.

The Court of Queen’s Bench Justice found Dunford not guilty of the more serious charge of criminal negligence causing death.

Richards, originally from New Brunswick, was on her first day on the road as a flag person when she was struck and killed by Dunford’s SUV. She was thrown the length of a Canadian Football League field.

The judge said during the trial that, despite seeing construction signs and seeing other drivers slow down in the construction zone, Dunford didn’t modify his speed.

The Crown was asking for three years in jail while the defense was looking for a suspended sentence and probation.
