A man who led Regina police on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle and assaulted another inmate has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison.

Michael Obey pleaded guilty Wednesday to assault, evading police and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Obey, 22, was arrested last June after he stole a pickup truck in Regina’s west end and led police on a chase through the city before dumping the vehicle.

Court also heard that Obey punched and kneed another inmate in the face while they were in a police holding tank awaiting transport to court last September.

Defence lawyer Carson Demmans said the victim had been “talking trash” to Obey about gang-related matters moments before the assault.

Justice Fred Kovach accepted a joint submission of seven months time served for the assault charge and a total of 27 months for the remaining charges. Obey will also be prohibited from driving for three years.
