Sentencing arguments got underway Thursday for a Saskatchewan man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his two granddaughters over a 13-year-period starting in the 1980s.
Reporting from outside the courthouse, CTV Regina's Dale Hunter said "there wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom" as the two victims, Nicole and Leanne Eger, took the stand.
The two women testified that their grandfather, Pete Therrien, began sexually assaulting them at his home in Willow Bunch when they were as young as four years old.
"I was always trying to fight him off; always trying to get away," Leanne testified.
"He forced me…I don't know why I never screamed or called for help."
When asked why they hadn't come forward earlier, Nicole said "it was taboo to talk about it; you just didn't talk about it."
Therrien also took the stand Thursday. The 86-year-old cried as he admitted to committing dozens of sexual assaults against his two young granddaughters.
Therrien said his wife of many years has left him and he has been diagnosed with depression.
Sentencing was adjourned to March 30.
