Workers who deal with kids in care in Saskatchewan are being told to talk to each other more after the death of a three-year-old boy at a foster home.

The Ministry of Social Services says there's a new protocol to ensure that child protection workers and foster home workers review quality of care concerns at foster homes together.

The protocol was implemented in the Regina office of the Ministry of Social Services after the little boy, who lived at a foster home in the nearby community of Pense, died of pneumonia in December 2009.

The jury at a coroner's inquest last month ruled his death a homicide, but laid the blame on the foster-care system.
