The Saskatchewan NDP is raising concerns after discovering the government had sold two publicly owned SaskEnergy gas plants to private out-of-province company.

The plants were sold to the Calgary-based company Steel Reef Infrastucture for $31.3 million. The plants are in the town of Kisbey and the village of Coleville. According to SaskEnergy, the plants are non-core assets.

No one currently works at the Kisbey plant. The eight people employed in Coleville will keep their jobs with Steel Reef.

The NDP believes the people of Saskatchewan should have been consulted before the sale was made.

“What was the decision behind selling these gas plants, what was the consultation with regards to that?” Nicole Rancourt, NDP SaskEnergy Critic, said. “I think these are simple questions.”

“What we’re seeing across the sector is, Enbridge for example and other major players in the gas sector, selling their gas processing assets so they can return to core pipeline and distribution operations,” Minister of SaskEnergy Bronwyn Eyre said.

SaskEnergy says the money will be used for future core projects.
