A Regina man with a long history of neglecting animals has been banned from owning animals for life and fined one dollar.
Lloyd Wilkinson, 56, pleaded guilty last week to one charge under Saskatchewan’s animal protection laws.
Wilkinson was accused of failing to care for his dog, Patch, after the eight-year-old terrier mix suffered a broken leg in December.
The Regina Humane Society says Wilkinson initially sought medical help for Patch, but he failed to provide follow-up care for the dog.
In a news release, the Humane Society said it’s disappointed that Wilkinson, whose history of neglecting animals spans 25 years, received such a light sentence.
The offence he pleaded guilty to carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
The Humane Society says Saskatchewan's animal protection laws must be toughened to protect animals sooner, and sentences should reflect that animal abuse and neglect is not acceptable.
