A Regina woman charged in the death of her toddler will face a preliminary hearing early next year.

Anna Marie Rose Wilkes is charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, indignity to a dead body and obstructing justice.

The 29-year-old made a brief appearance via video link in a Regina courtroom on Friday.

In May, police found the body of Wilkes' three-year-old son, Nylan Jordan George Clarke, in a van parked in the backyard of a home in the 200 block of Halifax Street.

Prosecutors allege Wilkes tried to set the van on fire with the child's body inside, and that she failed to seek medical care that could have saved him.

The preliminary hearing has been set for Jan. 16 and is expected to last five days.

If a judge decides there is enough evidence to hold a trial, Wilkes has elected to be tried by a Court of Queen's Bench judge and jury.
