The Regina Pats acquired 17-year-old defenceman Matthew Paranych in a trade with the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday.

For Paranych, the Pats sent the Tigers a third-round draft pick in 2025 and a 2028 fourth round pick.

The Edmonton, Alta. product has three goals and three assists in 20 games with the Tigers this season and is someone Pats’ general manager Alan Millar feels will bring significant offence from the blueline in the future.

“Matt is a young, skilled defencemen, who projects to be a very good offensive defensemen in our league. As a 17-year-old, we’re excited to add another talented, young player to our group,” Millar said in a news release.

Paranych is expected to be in the Pats’ (7-17-3-2) lineup on Friday night when they host the Saskatoon Blades (17-8-2-2) inside the Brandt Centre for the team’s first home game since Nov. 20.

The Pats will wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule Saturday night at home against the Moose Jaw Warriors, which will also be their annual teddy bear toss game, before breaking for the holidays until Dec. 27.
