A Regina police officer has been charged with assaulting a 64-year-old man.

The alleged incident happened in the Edenwold district on June 9.

Police say while the 42-year-old corporal was off duty at the time, he identified himself as a police officer and alleges he was acting within that capacity.

Authorities say the two men didn’t know each other before the incident.

Todd Sherwin of White City has been charged with assault. The 11-year member of the Regina Police Service made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Regina police Chief Troy Hagen has decided to leave Sherwin in his current duties until his court case has concluded. He will then face an internal administrative review.
