Major renovations could soon be in the works for one of Regina’s oldest shopping malls.

The proposed upgrades to Golden Mile Shoping Centre would total more than $20 million, according to SmartCentres. The company provides development and leasing services to the property’s owner, Retrocom REIT real estate investment trust.

In December, SmartCentres submitted a development permit application to the City of Regina. It includes plans to dismantle part of the mall to make way for a larger anchor tenant.

“This is an older-style mall and it is long overdue for extensive renovations, and that’s what we hope to do,” said SmartCentres spokesperson Sandra Kaiser. “The format is not as attractive to customers as an open-air mall, for example.”

Kaiser says some of the mall’s current tenants who are on month-to-month leases will be displaced if the plan moves ahead.

“As part of the renovations, if we proceed, there will have to be some tenants who will not be able to stay,” she said. “Some tenants have already given us notice that they’re leaving.”

SmartCentres would need to apply for a building permit before beginning construction this spring.
