Balfour Collegiate in Regina has changed the name of its athletic teams to the Bears.

The school’s former Redmen name and Indian head logo were considered by many to be racially insensitive. Balfour replaced the original logo with a red "B" in 1995.

A committee that included students, staff, elders, alumni and others in the community selected the new name, which was unveiled Friday along with a new bear logo.

Hundreds of potential names had been submitted by the public through an online process in November.

Earlier this year, Bedford Road High School in Saskatoon changed the name of its athletic teams from the Redmen to the Redhawks.
