Sacred Heart Community School in Regina is getting emergency funding to replace its gymnasium.

The former gym has been closed because of structural problems. On Friday the province announced a million dollars to convert a building next door into a full gym. Regina Catholic Schools will provide another half million dollars, for a total project cost of 1.5 million dollars.

“This is an interim solution,” said Education Minister Russ Marchuk. “We recognize there continues to be a need for a long term solution around school infrastructure for the community here.”

The conversion is expected to be finished for school in the fall.

“A gymnasium is an integral part of the quality education program we provide,” said Rob Currie, director of education for Regina Catholic Schools.

    “We are pleased.”

The division has 29 schools, with more than 10,000 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.
