Over the past century, Saskatchewan Youth Parliament has been the stepping stone for some great Canadian politicians, including former premiers and prime ministers.

Now, alumni have returned to celebrate the organization’s centennial during a three-day event this weekend. To those involved, the SYP is about growing as a politically minded Canadian citizen.

Muriel Garven says the organization itself has grown with time. She’s the first female premier with the SYP.  “Women represent a significant part of the population and we believe that our legislatures and parliaments should represent the people we have in our country."

In 1972, SYP permitted women to join, and today the impact of youth parliament's evolution is visible in its member's success, including the current SYP premier, Tava Burton.

“Expressing who you are, is probably the biggest thing we learn at SYP, to grow as an individual and to say your opinions, which are important."
