There’s been a shakeup in union representation at Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology campuses across the province.

The SIAST Faculty Association says it has replaced the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union as the group representing about 1,500 academic staff.

On Tuesday, the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board ruled that the SFA had met the legal requirements of a union, and had been chosen by employees through a secret ballot vote.

“Faculty members want to manage their own affairs,” interim SFA president Bob Knox said Wednesday in a news release.

“They want to improve the workplace, foster better relationships with management and increase transparency and accountability. SFA will deliver in all of these areas.”

The association has assembled an interim council with 53 representatives.

The SFA had been working toward the union split for the past year. A previous attempt failed by less than one per cent when SIAST was formed in 1988.
