Heavy rains opened up old wounds for Maple Creek residents a day before the one-year anniversary of the flooding that ravaged the southwestern Saskatchewan community.
On June 18, 2010, a wall of water swept through the northwest part of the community, destroying homes, businesses and roads. A large section of the Trans-Canada Highway was washed out and Eagle Valley Campground was submerged by a lake of floodwater.
One year later, the town is still rebuilding. A dozen homes were condemned and torn down and many more are still being repaired. Some businesses have survived, while others have closed.
A new nine-foot-tall dike is currently being construction around the town. Still, Maple Creek Mayor Barry Rudd says that, after last year's catastrophe, heavy rain still makes many residents nervous.
