Three people are dead and two were injured after a car veered off a highway and rolled over in a body of water in west-central Saskatchewan.

The crash happened along Highway 4, about 30 kilometres south of the Battlefords, shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday.

RCMP say one of the passengers managed to swim out of the partially submerged vehicle and summon help.

Emergency crews were able to remove another passenger from the vehicle. One of the survivors suffered minor injuries while the other was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver and two other passengers died in the crash. The victims have been identified as 28-year-old Wallie Mosquito, 34-year-old Lee Oxebin and 45-year-old Patrick Sanderson. All three are from the Mosquito First Nation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
