Regina residents who use Victoria Avenue between Coleman Crescent and Prince of Wales drive will have to use detours, starting Monday.

On June 22, the city will begin a major road construction project on the thoroughfare, between Coleman Crescent and Prince of Wales Drive.

Crews will begin replacement work on both bridges over Pilot Butte Creek east of Coleman Crescent, as well as widening Victoria Avenue to three lanes each way between Coleman Crescent and Prince of Wales Drive. The project also includes reconfiguration of the intersection of Coleman Crescent and Eastgate Drive, removal of the old timber bridge at Eastgate Drive, improvements to the pedestrian crossing at Coleman Crescent, and repaving existing stretches of Victoria Avenue.

The city says there will be delays as a result of the project. Drivers on Coleman Crescent will not be able to turn left onto Victoria Avenue, or cross, and right turns onto Victoria Avenue will only be allowed during certain stages of the project.

The city will de-activate traffic lights at the intersection of Coleman Crescent and Victoria Avenue in an attempt to reduce traffic delays.

The city tweeted this photo of a proposed detour:

The city also announced at an open house earlier this month that the Eastgate Service Road, which runs parallel to Victoria Avenue, will be closed permanently. This will create a‘t’ intersection, instead of having traffic flow from west to east.

“That was actually in the plans for quite a while”, Norman Kyle, Director of Roads and Transportation for the City of Regina told CTV News earlier in June, “The intersection at Coleman there between the service road and Victoria, it’s too close together, and that creates real safety hazards, and it’s a real concern for us.

Drivers who use Eastgate Drive from the west to access businesses will now have to drive around and use Prince of Wales Drive instead.

The project is expected to be completed on October 30. The cost of the project is currently sitting at $9.2 million.
