The future of 500 jobs in Moose Jaw is in question after the Saskatchewan government has announced it's shutting down Valley View Centre over the next four years.
The plan is to move residents of the aging complex to smaller, community-based group homes. However, at this point, it isn't known where those facilities will be located.
Social Services Minister June Draude says the government will work closely with employees and residents to develop transition plans and services to meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities.
Draude says the move will bring Saskatchewan in line with best practices in other provinces.
She notes there have been no new admissions at the centre in a decade and that the 57-year-old complex would have needed an estimated $37 million in upgrades to stay open.
