The twin brother of a man who was fatally stabbed outside a bar in north Regina took the stand as a murder trial continued Wednesday.
Robert Lowenberger became emotional at times as he described the events leading up to the death of his brother, Albert Lowenberger, outside the King’s Head Tavern in February 2008.
Ronald Zerr and Ashton Lavallee are both facing second-degree murder charges in the 26-year-old’s death.
Robert Lowenberger testified that he, his brother and their friend, Kelly Charbonneau, were involved in an altercation with Zerr and Lavallee as they were leaving the bar.
He said Zerr stabbed him twice in the face and once in the back while his brother struggled with Lavallee, who was also holding a knife.
“I could see my brother trying to hold back Mr. Lavallee,” he said. “Mr. Zerr came running from behind Albert and stabbed him.”
He says Zerr and Lavallee left the scene while Albert lay dying from a stab wound to his heart. Robert rushed to his fallen twin’s side, telling him to wake up, but he never did.
“Albert and I were very, very close,” he said.
“We were each other’s half.”
The trial is scheduled to resume Thursday.
