Freezing rain turns streets into skating rinks, literally in this Sask. community
They say the world is your oyster, and the streets are your stating rink – or at least they are in this Saskatchewan community.
A recent bout of freezing rain in southeastern Saskatchewan recently had kids in Weyburn making the best of a slippery situation.
With the streets covered in ice, 12-year-old Aiden Donison and 11-year-old Josh Gill laced up their skates and grabbed their hockey sticks and took to the ice, on their neighbourhood street.
“We were loving it. When we found out that there was a video, we were saying we’d be happy with 1,000 views,” Gill said.
The video on social media has gained over 100,000 views and has prompted quite a bit of attention around the two boys.
The pair said they got the idea after a family member mentioned seeing a similar video online, and they wanted to put it to the test. The makeshift rink took some trial and error, but once they found the ideal time of day, it was smooth skating.
"In the morning, like when the video got taken, it was pretty rough ... when it came to the night when we were skating the night, it was like super easy to like, just stop," Donison said.

"Once it got to the nighttime, the ice is beautiful. But when that video was getting recorded, we were trying our hardest not to fall because the ice [was] pretty slushy,” Gill added.
The boys said they've spent up to three and a half hours on the road.
An impressive addition to the hours they already spend on ice with the Weyburn East Red Wings hockey team.
"Because we just kept having more and more fun because we made more and more twists and stuff,” Gill explained.
The pair plan to keep enjoying the makeshift rink with their friends as long as weather permits.
