After some debate, Regina city council unanimously passed a bylaw to ban smoking and vaping on patios, playgrounds and other outdoor public spaces.

During the council meeting on Monday night, the city discussed several amendments, including a request for an exemption by an lgbtq nightclub for safety reasons.

The club argued that the ban would force smoking patrons into a dark alley, adding that customers have been targeted outside in the past.

The amendment was voted down; with most councilors nothing that there are no such exemptions in other cities with smoking bans, but Mayor Fourgere did ask city administration to look into the club’s concerns.

The new bylaw will take effect on July 15, 2017.
