The trial for one of the teenage boys accused of murdering Hannah Leflar began on Monday.

Leflar, 16, was murdered inside her Regina home in January 2015.

Two boys were arrested and charged with first degree murder in the case.

The other boy pleaded guilty but is waiting for a psychological assessment to be completed before being sentenced next May.

The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Jury selection took place on Monday morning. Eight men and six women were sworn in for the two week trial.

The court heard opening statements in the afternoon.

Crown Prosecutor Chris White set out a series of events that he says lead to Hannah's death.

He explained how Hannah's killer, the teen who has already pleaded guilty in her death, surprised her at her home, chased her with a knife and eventually stabbed her ten times, killing her.

But, White says he wasn't alone. The crown says the accused, now on trial, was with him every step of the way, from planning right up until her death.

White says this was all a part of a plan dubbed "Project Zombify" by Leflar's killer, the accused and a group of their friends.

The Crown has upwards of 20 witnesses to call, including the teen who has already confessed to killing her.

The defense painted a different picture. Greg Wilson told the jury how the accused did in fact try to stop Leflar's killer, and says the accused didn't know what the killer was planning on doing the day the two drove to Leflar's home when she died.

Wade Anderson, Leflar’s stepfather, was the first witness to take the stand. He testified that he found her body when he arrived home from work that afternoon.

He says he turned on the bathroom light and noticed that Leflar had blood in her hair, but he couldn’t see any injuries. He called 911.

Cst. Jeff Crowley also took the stand. He was the first officer to respond to Anderson’s 911 call.

"Right away I knew she was deceased," he says.
