Sask. RCMP investigating woman's death on Piapot First Nation

Saskatchewan RCMP says it is investigating the death of a 30-year-old woman on Piapot First Nation as suspicious in nature.

Police were called to a residence on the First Nation around 8:15 Thursday morning where they located the body of 30-year-old Melanie Asham-Obey from Pasqua First Nation, an RCMP news release says.

According to the release, the woman’s family has been notified of her death.

“The female’s death is considered suspicious in nature. Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes took carriage of the investigation and continue to investigate,” the release said.

There will be an increased police presence on Piapot First Nation for an undetermined amount of time, RCMP said, adding they do not believe there is any current risk to the public’s safety.

RCMP are asking people with information to report it immediately to their local police by calling 310-RCMP or through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.

More information will be provided when available, RCMP said.
