Sask. RCMP make arrest in suspicious death on Piapot First Nation

Saskatchewan RCMP have charged and arrested Robin Kaiswatum, 40, with second degree murder in connection to a death on Piapot First Nation.

Kaiswatum was arrested on the evening of Jan. 4 in Regina with the assistance of the Regina Police Service (RPS).

The series of events began on Jan. 2 at around 8:15 a.m. when officers from Southey RCMP were dispatched following a report of an injured woman at a home on Piapot First Nation.

Officers found the victim, 30-year-old Melanie Asham-Obey of Pasqua First Nation, dead at the scene.

A suspicious death investigation began and ultimately led to the arrest.

Kaiswatum made his first appearance in provincial court in Regina on Monday.

Saskatchewan RCMP's major crimes unit is continuing to investigate.

Piapot First Nation is located approximately 35 kilometres northeast of Regina.
