Contractor fatally injured while on the job at Regina's Evraz plant
Evraz North America says an investigation is underway after a contractor was fatally injured while on the job in Regina earlier this week.
In a statement sent to CTV News Thursday, the company said the contractor died on Nov. 19th – adding that the organization is fully cooperating with the investigation.
“We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate this incident. Due to the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, we are unable to provide additional information at this time,” the statement read.
Evraz went on to say that the safety of its team members is its highest priority and central to everything the company does.
"We are committed to supporting our employees and contractors during this challenging time while continuing to ensure the well-being of everyone who works at or visits our facilities," it added.
Over the past eight years, the company has paid more than $1.4 million in fines connected to workplace injuries at its Regina plant.
In 2016, a piece of waste metal hit a worker’s foot while they were riding in a rail car. Evraz pled guilty in 2019 to failing to provide sufficient lighting at a work site. The company ended up paying $126,000.
In 2017, a worker ruptured his quadriceps tendon while stepping into a pit. Evraz pled guilty to failing to provide a safe means of exit from a place of employment in 2019. It paid $100,000 to the court.
A 2018 incident saw a worker injured after stepping on a turn roll motor. That incident led to a guilty plea by Evraz and a $322,000 fine.
Early 2019 saw three workplace injuries occur in a matter of weeks. Two of these incidents led to Evraz paying $935,000 in fines after pleading guilty in 2021 to violating occupational health and safety rules.
The first incident on Jan. 24 saw a worker slip and fall on snow and ice before being pinned between a pipe and steel plate of a conveyor.
The second incident on Feb. 6 involved a worker being seriously injured after a machine moved while they were trying to put out a grease fire.
The third incident on Mar. 3 involved a contractor. They were treated in hospital and released the same day.
In July of 2020, a contractor with Dynamo Electric received non-life-threatening injuries while working at the Regina plant.
