Environment Canada confirmed that a tornado touched down near Regina Beach, Wednesday evening.
Delwin and Reuban Hofer farm by the Arm River hutterite colony near Disley, where that same tornado touched down in their canola crop.
“(The tornado) kept swirling and swirling till it was at the ground,” described Reuban Hofer. “Then, it started picking up canola and trees.”
The farmers followed the funnel cloud until it touched down in their field, flattening their canola.
“You could literally hear the cloud just going around everything,” said Delwin Hofer. “Then, the tornado went past us then another shot of rain came.”
This is one of more than a dozen tornadoes Environment Canada has confirmed this year.
According to the weather agency, the severe summer weather isn’t easing up any time soon.
“We have been fairly consistent in a pattern throughout southern Saskatchewan where low pressure systems have passed through,” said John Paul Cragg. “There doesn't seem to be any change to that pattern so far showing up.”
Thankfully for the Hofers, they have tornado insurance, which could prove useful if their crop doesn’t stand itself up again.
