A group that welcomes international newcomers to Regina is looking for rental housing and Arabic-speaking volunteers as the city prepares for displaced Syrians to arrive.

The Regina Open Door Society says it doesn't know how many refugees to expect in the coming weeks.

But the group says it was there when refugees from Vietnam and Kosovo came to Saskatchewan and it will be prepared to help those from Syria too.

Society executive director Darcy Dietrich says the move to Canada might be intimidating for some, especially if they've never travelled before.

Dietrich says the Open Door Society will greet them at the airport, provide orientation and help get children into school.

Premier Brad Wall has said Saskatchewan is preparing for the arrival of about 850 refugees, based on immigration proportions allotted to the provinces.
