Residents of a subsidized seniors complex in Regina have launched a petition after they were banned from bringing used items into the building because of concerns over bed bugs.

Last Friday, residents of Prairie Place were notified they can no longer bring in anything used, including items from thrift stores, garage sales and even things from family members.

“I think it’s almost like a dictatorship – you do it or else you’re out,” said Prairie Place resident Joan McLean.

The agency that manages the building, Regina Housing Authority, says the notice was issued to reduce pest infestation.

Over 70 residents have signed a petition against the new rule. They say it infringes on their rights and doesn’t take into account the reality of living on a fixed income.

"This is a lower-income building,” said Prairie Place resident Brett Mitchell. “People cannot afford the prices of new furniture.”

Regina Housing Authority says it recognizes it hasn’t properly communicated with residents on the rule change, and it plans to consult with tenants on finding a solution to keep bed bugs at bay.
