Two Regina media outlets have been granted access to a video showing a city police officer kicking an intoxicated man.

A judge ruled Thursday that CTV Regina and the Leader-Post could have a copy of the video shown in court.

Const. Robert Power was found guilty last year of assault causing bodily harm. He was charged after he kicked Edward Stonechild in the stomach outside a detox centre near the city’s downtown in May 2012.

The incident was captured on surveillance video.

The kick caused Stonechild to fall backward and hit his head on a concrete wall. He was treated for a cut in hospital and was released later that day.

Power was fired by Regina police after the charges were laid. He was reinstated this past December after a Queen's Bench judge reviewed the case and overturned the conviction. An independent hearing officer appointed by the Saskatchewan Police Commission also ruled Power should be reinstated.

A Crown prosecutor filed an appeal in November against the decision to overturn Power’s conviction.

CTV Regina requested access to the video in early December 2014.
