RCMP have announced a new commanding officer for Saskatchewan.

Brenda Butterworth-Carr will formally take over the position later this year.

She joined the RCMP in 1987 as a native special constable.

Butterworth-Carr is replacing outgoing Assistant Commissioner Russ Mirasty, who is retiring at the end of the month.

She will become the first female aboriginal commanding officer of an RCMP division.
