A new rooftop heliport was officially unveiled Tuesday at the Regina General Hospital.

Health Minister Dustin Duncan says the $3.4 million heliport will allow patients to be transported to the hospital about 15 minutes faster. For a patient, that can make a significant difference, he said.

The heliport has been certified by Transport Canada, and the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) is expected to begin using it in mid-December.

A similar heliport will be installed on the roof of the new children’s hospital in Saskatoon. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
