More than 400 workers at the Evraz steel mill in Regina could be laid off later this month.
The company issued a precautionary layoff notice to workers Monday.
The United Steel Workers Local 5890 says about 80 per cent of the 510 union members in the mill’s tubular division could be laid off indefinitely on Jan. 20.
In a statement, Evraz said it may need to temporarily suspend production at the spiral mill because of rail-related logistical challenges.
On its website, the union said rail cars were held up by the recent winter storms that hit eastern parts of Canada and the U.S.
Saskatchewan Energy and Resources Minister Tim McMillan says he’s raised the issue with the federal government.
“This is something that we are attentive to and will continue to be because this is important to growth in our province,” McMillan said.
Evraz says it’s working with the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National railway companies to get the pipe back on the tracks in the next couple of weeks. The company said it’s optimistic that it can avoid shutting down production.
