The Canadian Cancer Society says it's time for the Saskatchewan government to restrict the use of indoor tanning beds for people under the age of 18.

The society says it's concerned about the rise in skin cancer among young people.

Spokeswoman Donna Pasiechnik says studies have shown that tanning before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 75 per cent.

Pasiechnik says Nova Scotia is only province with a restriction in place, although British Columbia is expected to have a similar regulation take effect this fall.

She says Saskatchewan needs to take that step, too.

The call came as the province held a news conference to boast that the number of people waiting to see an oncologist dropped almost 50 per cent between April 2010 and February 2012.
