Grade 3 to 5 students from Regina’s Marion McVeety and St. Gabriel schools helped Sparky the Fire Dog celebrate his 65th birthday as part of National Fire Prevention Week.
Education Minister Don Morgan, Regina Fire Chief Ernie Polsom and Duane McKay, Saskatchewan’s emergency management and fire safety commissioner, joined Sparky to give the students a smoke alarm demonstration. Sparky was surprised with a birthday cake and a gift of smoke alarms to share with each of the students. Regina’s fire department also put on a fire truck demonstration for the students.
“Helping Sparky celebrate his birthday is part of our ongoing work to educate our young people about fire prevention,” Morgan said in a news release Tuesday.
The Saskatchewan government has proclaimed Oct. 9 to 15 Fire Prevention Week across the province.
