The City of Regina says it had to release some untreated wastewater into Wascana Creek after heavy rains filled up lagoons at the sewage treatment plant.

Until Thursday, untreated wastewater was temporarily being bypassed at the city’s main sewage pump station near McCarthy Boulevard and screened to remove non-organic solids before being released into the creek.

The city has been releasing partially treated wastewater from the plant into the creek since last Thursday, and the situation is expected to last at least a week, depending on the weather.

In the meantime, people downstream are being advised not to use Wascana Creek for recreational purposes.

Officials say the city’s drinking water supply remains safe.
