The official start of spring may be a little more than two weeks away, but winter isn't loosening its icy grip on Saskatchewan just yet.

Environment Canada is warning that temperatures will fall to around -30 C as an Arctic ridge builds over the province.

The frigid temperatures, combined with winds of 10 to 15 kilometres an hour, will result in extreme wind chills of -40 or colder overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning, the agency said.

Extreme cold warnings were issued for Regina, Saskatoon and a swath of other communities in an area stretching from Meadow Lake to the southeast corner of the province.

The bitterly cold air is expected to be replaced by a milder air mass Thursday.
