Debbie McElravey smiled as she recalled the last time she saw her seven-year-old granddaughter Meadow McElravey.

“(She was) full of energy. She just (brightened) a room as soon as she (walked) in. She (was) always smiling,” said McElravey.

On Monday night, Meadow and her mother Trish were driving in an SUV when they were involved in a collision.

“They went out for supper on their way home,” said McElravey.

“They went to Chubby's (Bar and Grill) in Belle Plain, and when they were leaving - I'm not sure all the details yet - but she went back on to Highway 1 and got hit.”

RCMP said a car collided with Trish’s SUV in the westbound lane of Highway 1 at around 6 p.m. Meadow was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“I'm just waiting for her to come back into the room. I still can't believe it's real,” said McElravey.

McElravey remembers Meadow as a bright little girl who adored animals and spending time with her family.

“She was so smart,” said McElravey.

“I remember driving her home one day back to her mom's, and she was like, ‘grandma, two plus two is four,’ and she was doing 10 times 10.”

Meadow’s aunt, Jasmine Leont, said her niece loved playing with Leont’s five-month-old son Noah.

“She was so good with him. My mom (called) her ‘mother hen,’ because she was so good,” said Leont.

RCMP are still investigating what caused the collision. The lone driver of the other vehicle was also taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

McElravey and Leont started a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of Meadow's funeral, as well as to help relieve Trish’s financial burden while she recovers in hospital. As of Wednesday afternoon, the page had raised more than $7,000.
