Terry McArthur is resigning as chief of the Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation after he was sentenced to jail for sexually assaulting a teenaged girl.

According to an agreement signed between McArthur and band council, the former chief will be paid out for the remainder of his term, on top of his severance. All told, McArthur will receive $47,625.

Earlier this month, McArthur, 48, was sentenced to nine months in jail after he admitted to inappropriately touching a girl, who was 16 at the time.

McArthur had stayed on as chief of the southeastern Saskatchewan reserve after pleading guilty to the charge, despite demands for his resignation.
