A Regina woman who robbed an off-sale and stabbed a man just days after her release on a manslaughter conviction has been sentenced to seven years in jail.

The 20-year-old woman, who cannot be named, earlier pleaded guilty to armed robbery and aggravated assault charges stemming from two separate incidents in July.

The first happened just four days after she was released under community supervision as part of a two-year sentence for manslaughter.

Court heard the accused and a 13-year-old girl committed an armed robbery at the Jolly Roger off-sale.

The accused sprayed a security guard with bear mace, while her young accomplice stabbed the cashier in the stomach with a steak knife. Both employees suffered minor injuries.

The 13-year-old later told police she didn’t want to go through with the robbery. She said she was afraid of the accused because she is a member of the Native Syndicate gang and a convicted killer.

About a week later, the accused returned to the Jolly Roger with a different female accomplice. The two planned to rob the off-sale, but the security guard recognized the accused from the previous incident and kicked them out.

A short time later, the accused asked a customer who was leaving the off-sale if he had a cigarette.

When the 32-year-old man told her he didn’t, she pulled out a large kitchen knife and stabbed him in the bicep. He was taken to hospital and was later released.

A lawyer for the Crown said the accused is a dangerous woman with a lengthy and violent criminal history.

When she was 17, she stabbed and killed 18-year-old Jasmine Smith with a steak knife during a fight at a birthday party in June 2011. Members of Smith’s family were present in court at Thursday’s sentencing.

The Crown had asked for a nine-year prison term. However, a lawyer for the accused said such a sentence would be unduly long and harsh, and he asked for a lesser punishment of five years.

Calling the accused “a callous, ruthless criminal at the tender age of 20,” a judge sentenced her to seven years behind bars.
