A man and a woman from Regina will be facing numerous charges after allegedly leading police on a chase in a stolen taxi.

Police attempted to stop a brown Crown Victoria around 9:30 on Monday evening after noticing it was missing a back license plate in the area of Dewdney Avenue and St. John Street.

According to police the driver took off, and proceeded to travel throughout downtown and east Regina, ignoring traffic lights, and driving into oncoming traffic. Police finally found the vehicle, abandoned, in the area of 10th Ave. and Lacon St.

Police then attempted to stop a taxi that was leaving the area of the police perimeter that had two passengers, believed to be the suspects. Investigators say when they attempted to detain the two passengers; the male suspect pepper sprayed the officer’s face, and threw the cabbie out of the vehicle. The taxi then took off from the scene.

Investigators tracked the vehicle to Coleman Street and Victoria Avenue, heading westbound. As the cab approached University Park Drive, it entered the oncoming lane. Officers in four vehicles performed a high risk vehicle stop, and were able to stop the cab.

Two suspects were apprehended, and after searching the car, police found a can of bear spray, and a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

The cab driver suffered minor injuries. The officer who was bear sprayed was treated and sent home.
