The Regina Chamber of Commerce is warning city hall that now is not the time to be raising property taxes.

In a recent survey of the local business community, the chamber says the majority of its members would not support a property tax increase larger than two per cent.

Regina city council is currently considering a budget proposal that would see a tax hike of 4.18 per cent.

Chamber president, John Hopkins, says many businesses are seriously worried about the future of Saskatchewan’s economy.

“There’s a lot of concern out there, because there’s a lot of unknowns,” he said, pointing to the incoming Trump presidency and concerns over potential carbon taxes or prices.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty out there, and the big one in Saskatchewan, of course, is the commodities and where are they, and where will they be in the future.”

Hopkins intends to present his concerns and opposition to the proposed tax increase at an upcoming budget meeting.

Regina city council is set to vote on its proposed budget next month.
