A 37 year old Regina man died this morning while on the way to hospital. The Regina Police Service says he’d been taken into custody, and based on his condition they decided to send him to hospital, but he didn’t make it.

Police received a call at 5:08 a.m. about a sick or injured person on the 0-99 block of Nollet Avenue. The caller described a partially clothed man yelling and running near an apartment complex.

Officers said the man appeared to be intoxicated and wasn’t responding to their questions or demands.

At 5:15 a.m., police requested an ambulance. Police said the man’s condition worsened while in transport to hospital. He was pronounced dead in hospital at 6:13 a.m.

The Office of the Chief Coroner will do an investigation in conjunction with police into the death. The Coroner’s Office has ordered an autopsy. Because the death occurred in police custody, an independent observer has been appointed by the Ministry of Corrections and Policing.

Police have interviewed officers, and several neighbours and potential witnesses and everyone who had contact with the deceased will have to submit a statement or be interviewed as part of the investigation.

A critical incident stress debriefing has been arranged for the start of the evening shift, and the officers involved in the incident will return to duty this evening.

The name of the deceased has not been released at this time.
