The Saskatchewan Roughriders were the only CFL team that exceeded the league’s salary cap last season.

The CFL says a semi-annual audit of the league’s eight teams revealed the Riders exceeded the $4.4 million salary cap by just under $18,000.

Teams are fined one dollar for every dollar they exceed the cap, up to $100,000. The fine doubles if the cap is exceeded by $100,000 and triples if a team’s salary expenditures are over by more than $300,000.

Clubs that exceed the cap by more than $100,000 also lose their first round draft pick, while teams that go over by more than $300,000 lose their first two selections.

The order of this year’s CFL draft on May 13 won’t change because no team went over the cap by more than $100,000 last season.
